Suber, cork oak
Native to the Mediterranean basin, it is an evergreen with a spreading, spreading crown that can reach 20 meters in height. Of all the varieties of the Quercus genus, it is the shortest-lived, with an average lifespan of 250 years. The trunk, starting in its tenth year, becomes spongy, up to 10 cm thick, with large gray-brown (cork) grooves. The leaves are green but have a glaucous appearance; they are leathery with edges serrated with small spines. It bears fruit and flowers like other oaks.
Ilex, holm oak
A typical Mediterranean plant, it is an evergreen with a very thick, globular crown. It has a smooth, gray trunk that turns blackish over time and splits into small squares with fissures. Its leaves are not very large, gray, and hairy when they emerge, becoming
then green and smooth; the latter have no well-defined shape and suffer from a high level of polymorphism. The showy, yellow flowers appear in early summer, borne on long catkins. It has a taproot system that complicates transplanting and potting. Used
for hedges and barriers it is also excellently used in avenues and public areas.
